How can I take care of my baby`s teeth?
You should take care of the child`s mouth cavity long before his first tooth will come in. Good dental hygiene habits will help to prevent infections as a result of bacteria building up. Infant`s gums need to be wiped with a damp soft cloth each time after feeding. When the first teeth appear start brushing them using special soft children`s toothbrush. The procedure has to be done twice a day.
At the age of 6-7 years old you can begin to use fluoride toothpaste. The brush shouldn’t be covered with toothpaste, the right amount of it is just pea-sized. Don’t let the child swallow a lot of the toothpaste as it can cause appearing of permanent stains on his teeth.
Tooth enamel hardens making teeth stronger if you use fluoride. In many cities fluoride is added into tap water. In the areas where it doesn’t happen the children of about 6 months old are usually prescribed special fluoride tablets as these substance is very important for the child`s dental health. However parents shouldn’t let the child eating too much of them as this will cause permanent stains on the teeth.
Remember, only good care of baby`s teeth will help you to prevent cavities in your child`s teeth. The risk for them greatly increases if a child eats a lot of sugary food, such as cookies, raisins or candies, drink a lot of sweetened drinks or sweet liquids, fruit juice, soda or punch, for instance.
Babies with certain risk factors for cavities including having been born early or too little weighting at birth, having ongoing teeth care needs, having brown areas or white spots on teeth, should be paid special attention. Regular visits to a dentist along with good teeth care can prevent cavities in your child`s teeth.
